Change
04/24/03

Everyone thought I was joking
When I said I quit smoking
But after I got my wake up slap
My youngest son just had a lung to collapse
My cousin and good friend of mine
Just died from a heart attack she was thirty nine
Allot of things went through my brain
Maybe it's time for more change
I changed allot since 9/11
I try to insure I'm going to heaven
But now I'm concerned about my health
I have some money but family's my wealth
I must try to remain young
I'll soon have a brand new grandson
For him I must have energy to play
And watch him grow and have children someday
With the arrival of him I'll have four
Not bad for a man soon to be forty four
If I add my children it will make eight
There's four of them and that's great
Sometimes it seems we all need a wake up call
But why do we wait until we fall
Why is there so many questions
When we have so many blessings
Sometimes I feel so ashamed
That I would even need to change
I look to the future and remember the past
Maybe I can make this life last
To face death I know I'm ready
But I would rather wait until I'm eighty
Just let me see my great grandchildren play
That will change me in every way
With loving thoughts of family in my brain
I know that will never change

Signs
03/02/03
They are every where all around
On every street in every town
These things we see along the way
Show the way to work or play
They point the way to places to eat
And even name the street
But that's not the signs I'm looking for
I want signs from the one I adore
Ones that say you are mine
I want you for all time
You know the kind I'm talking about
Not the ones that make you pout
But the ones that make you proud
Yet don't have to be spoken out loud
When you can just look in the eye
And don't have to ask why
You always know what they mean
Like you felt it in a dream
Once your with someone long enough
You don't have to speak to say stuff
With a wink you read their mind
If their going to be nasty or kind
And they can do the same to you
They know exactly what your going to do
Sometimes before you even know
Signs tell them where you will go
And what you will do before you get there
And if you do really care
Signs speak for both husband and wife
Remember you married for life
Signs can be settle yet speak so loud
You can hear them above any crowd
If you don't read the signs love won't last
You will fade slowly into the past
And your love will soon be gone
You'll find yourself all alone
Another love story that went bad
Two broken hearts that's always sad
The signs I've read have been so good
I read them just like I should
That's why our love has lasted so long
And brought me a great family and home
That's how I keep her so sweet and kind
By being able to read the signs

Pretend
03/10/03

Papaw will you pretend
That I'm a dog again
Play like I'm a fish
And you got your wish
Pretend that I'm a cat
And that I caught a rat
Act like I'm a squirrel
And I can scare a girl
Play like you see a turkey
While eating some jerky
Play like I'm a deer
And I want come over hear
My grandson always wants to pretend
That he's an animal again
The things he wants to play
Never ceases to amaze
We play and pretend all we can
Makes me a better man
Timing him while he runs
Can be such fun
He has grown so fond
Of our favorite catfish pond
That smile when he catches a fish
I sure did get my Christmas wish
Born on Christmas day
Gives us more reasons to play
The one thing I'm sure of
I'm addicted to unconditional love
I don't have to pretend fun
Since I got my grandson
I don't have more time to write
He's coming to spend the night
Hark I hear him again
Goodbye I must go play and pretend

The Heart Of Man
03/17/03

Many things are in the heart
Full of love is a great place to start
In the heart there can be hate
Get it out before it's to late
Sadness can fill it's chambers
Especially if you are a blamer
We all have had those lonely hearts
Bad relationships can be where it starts
In a world filled with despair
Fill your heart with a prayer
A heart can heal a broken soul
Let your's shine where ever you go
Something that can pump life's blood
Has got to be full of good
A hardened heart is so sad
Usually leads to something bad
Don't think your gonna stumble
Just because your heart is humble
I'll take that kind any time
They are usually soft and kind
A heart should be like a mother's love
You know the kind I'm speaking of
One that is always ready to forgive
The kind that makes you want to live
All the good and bad that's in this land
Can be found in the heart of man

In Better Times
03/24/03

I wish I could have known
My grandparents better before they were gone
My grandfather was killed when I was nine
My grandmother was with him at the time
She didn't die right then and there
But it left her where she didn't care
They were the parents of my mother
From that day she didn't fully recover
It left her feeling lost and alone
All of a sudden her parents were gone
My father's mother lived with us a while
I barely remember,I was just a child
I can still see her in my head
She was the first person I ever saw dead
I walked in the room and there she laid
I was to young to be afraid
It was later when they said she had died
I don't know if I cried
I never knew my father's dad
I would give anything if I had
He died when my dad was just a boy
He to missed out on the joy
We both missed out on his love
I hope he sees us from up above
I truly believe I'll meet him someday
I always remember him when I pray
In better times they'd still be alive
And be a great part of our life
I will always have them in my heart
And will tell my grandsons about their part
How if not for them they wouldn't be hear
For me to hold so close and dear
In better times there will be no dying
And tears of joy will be the only crying
I know in your life and in mine
Someday we'll be living in better times

The End
04/08/03

From the beginning to the end
Let all broken hearts mend
From the start to the finish
Let hate diminish
I searched my soul today
I knelt down to pray
Time came and went
My heart broke and bent
A picture from the past
About a life that didn't last
Suddenly I got that scary feeling
And I could hear tires squealing
That terrible sound of bending metal
The useless brake pedal
A grandfather was going to die
A drunk driver the reason why
Taken away before his time
What a terrible crime
The killer had been convicted twice
But the judge was so nice
He let him go with just a warning
He killed grandfather the next morning
Our lives have never been the same
A drunk driver is to blame
For his crime he served three years
Grandfather was killed for a few beers
I can't explain how it makes me feel
It's not in me to kill
I try to find the will to forgive
I pray that someday I will
You see I'm just a simple man
Trying to simply understand
How a killer runs free
While we sit and grieve
Focusing now on the pain
From loss can there be gain
A message I hope this poem will send
We'll have justice in the end

Light House
04/16/03
What can I say about my spouse
Except she is my light house
She always lights the way
Each and every day
She makes each day full of light
And lights the way even at night
And when I hold her tight
I can feel her warm light
No she isn't a light weight
In her heart there is no hate
Only love comes from her heart
I knew it from the very start
I hope that she can surely see
She is the only light I will ever need
Yes she is the world to me
Without her light I could not see
All the love she gives to me
She will always shine her light
And make my life so full and bright
So to her I send my love
As if a gift from above
Yes this poem is very true
As her light comes shining through
This is to my precious valentine
From her loving husband Brian
He loves to see her light shine
This poem's for you my spouse
You are my Light House

A Mind
05/12/03

The wonders of the mind
Can be told with or without rhyme
The mind will think about a story to tell
Then comes the poems we love so well
Poems of fathers and mothers
Sad and happy tales of others
Remembrance of days and years past
Stories of lives that didn't last
We write tales of a falling snowflake
Stories about a boat on the lake
What it's like to drink alone
And go to a house where no one's home
Tales about prison walls
Or just a visit to the halls
You can never tell about the mind
Who knows what story it will find
It could be you to dance with the brazen moon
Or write a story about war and gloom
It could simply be about a waterfall
Or a soldier answering the call
You may go sail on the Nimitz
With the mind there are no limits
I heard one about a daddy that's abusive
It may be time he faced the music
I believe that one came from the heart
And that's a great place to start
But the heart must tap into the mind
And look around and try to find
All the things it wants to say
To tell the story in a special kind of way
Behind each great story you will find
A heart and of course a mind

Thank You
07/06/03

United we stand divided we fall
To all service men and women
I thank you all
If not for you no freedom we'd know
I was so sad when off to war you had to go
We've all learned that freedom's
Not cheap
For all that have fallen
I weep
Gone is the tyrant of this war
We know freedom
Is worth fighting for
Your sacrifice is one that is great
You have fought a war for freedom's sake
No one can thank you enough
Bless you for calling Saddam's bluff
Sure there is allot of work to do
As freedom comes shining through
All of your families have paid the price
God Bless them for being so nice
They too have made the sacrifice
And truly understand why we fight
To rid the world of the most dangerous guns
We called upon
Mothers, Daughters, Fathers, and Sons
They have all helped to change history
The reason they fight is not a mystery
Freedom
That's the reason we need them
God Bless each and every soldier
For all they carried on their shoulder
Because of them the world is a safer place
God please show them your amazing grace
Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines
You have let freedom ring
I sleep allot better at night
For my freedom I know you will fight
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much
And may God send you his loving touch
Thank you

Fruits Of Our Labor
07/15/03

It is such a blessing when you can savor
The fruits of your labor
It's not a paycheck that you cash
Or money you can stash
No it's allot more than that
It's more like a feather in your hat
The rewards that you are given
Are a reflection of the life you are living
When your fruit spoils on the vine
It means you have wasted time
And time waits for no one, you or me
And fruit doesn't fall far from the tree
For our fruits to bare all they can bare
We must learn to listen and share
Because when you listen you blossom
And your fruit will ripen instead of rotten
As the old story goes
You reap what you sew
And I truly believe that is true
For both me and you
When you plant corn that's what you grow
When you sew love you grow your soul
And your heart grows sweet and ripe
As you become a fruitful tree of life
We must be careful as we plant our seed
And not turn our back on those in need
As life comes in many a different flavor
So do the fruits of our labor
